Enlightenment is not really something you think of when you think of Christianity, but that does not mean it’s not the ultimate form of enlightenment. You know the source you’re getting your answers and information from (God), which honestly makes me feel more at ease. The universe is not a reputable source in my opinion because it’s not an actual intelligent being. Also, thanking the universe is like a kid thanking the house they live in instead of thanking their parents for giving them a roof over their head.
Throughout the gospel of John, it refers to a light which is in reference to Jesus and God being the light of the world. “The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world.” John 1:9. The middle of the word enlightenment is light and the meaning of enlighten is to give someone greater knowledge and understanding about a subject or situation. The Holy Spirit has been referred to as the Helper by Jesus and that’s exactly what He’s been to me and others who have a personal relationship with Him. Sometimes, He gives an answer instantly. Other times, He takes a little longer depending on the question or situation. He will also answer in various ways besides the still, small voice in your head.
“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.” Matthew 7:7. Sometimes, we might not be able to handle the answer to a question, which is why it takes a little longer for some questions to be answered. Usually, the Holy Spirit enlightens in more than one way for more serious questions. Some of the ways He answers is by speaking to you in your head, through you talking to other people, through other people talking to you, various signs, and other ways that are more customized to the individual. For instance, before I started diligently seeking God, I was into numerology and angel numbers. Now, He consistently communicates and reassures me through numbers that have different meanings. Ultimately, God isn’t the only one who enlightens people with the knowledge of the universe. The dark forces do as well.
“This Present Darkness” by Frank Peretti refers to demons being the culprits behind the whole enlightenment and meditation movement going on in the small town. After my brush with demons and getting into that kind of stuff without knowing God very well, I believe that theory and theme of the book has some merit. My reasoning is that without seeking a relationship with God and being saved by Jesus Christ, the demons still win if they give people a good life on Earth and avert them away from the idea or even the thought of spending an eternity elsewhere if they don’t have a personal relationship with the Holy Spirit. “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers against the authorities , against the powers of the dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” Ephesians 6:12.
Enlightenment and knowledge is priceless. “Blessed is the one who finds wisdom, and the one who gets understanding, for the gain from her is better than gain from silver and her profit is better than gold. She is more precious than jewels, and nothing you desire can compare with her.” Proverbs 3:13-15. The only other thing more valuable than that is having a personal relationship with God, learning how He loves us, and showing that Christ-like love to others in this world. God will give you enlightenment and anything else you ask for that is for His will as long as you love Him first and everyone else like you love yourself.
